Rafting Athi River

Please note: We only raft the Athi River during high, high water, this is during the peaks of the November or May rains. Please reach out to us before planning this trip for the right water levels.

There are few river trips on this planet that can compare with the Athi River Expedition. The Athi gives us a combination of stunning white water and African wildlife in their natural habitat. The section of the Athi River that we raft borders Tsavo National Park to the east, offering sightings of many species, including bushbuck, giraffe, buffalo, elephant, crocodiles, monkeys and hippo. The bird life is spectacular and to date, our guides have recorded over 120 species.

The Athi River is a “pool/drop” river meaning that we float through the pools of calm water admiring the wildlife and then navigate a rapid between class 2 and 4 white water, giving us the ultimate river safari. Our nights are spent camping on one of the many white sandy beaches beside the river.

Questions

1What do I need to bring with me when I go rafting?
If you are on an expedition please reach out to us for our full packing list, otherwise what you will need on the raft includes: Sports shirt that can get wet, (not cotton), swim shorts, shoes that can not come off your feet but can get wet, sunscreen, sunglasses, a change of clothes for after and of course a smile.
2Is rafting dangerous?
All adventure sports hold a certain degree of risk, but rafting is one of the safest sports out there. At Savage Wilderness, we use top-end equipment imported from America and our guides hold international rafting qualifications. On our trips, we give you options to walk big rapids and enjoy at a level you are comfortable with.
3When is the best time for rafting?
The tana river can be rafted all year round and people enjoy low water a lot. But for all our trips we recommend the rainy season for the most adrenaline-pumping trips. November/ December and April/ May.
